Bitter Sweet
My story is about a young man who was in a car accident in December of 2000 that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. His future looked very dim. He was pronounced brain dead and doctors said "if he lived he would be nothing more than a vegetable". Over the past eight years he has fought and struggled to regain what he once was in a world that has not always been so nice. Many times he has been falsely judged as being "high or intoxicated" and at times even being called "retarded". What’s so remarkable about him is that he didn't let any of this turn him into a bitter or uncaring person. Although he still has some things to overcome he still manages to be there for others. He has been there for me so many times and in so many ways. He not only takes the time to do those little things that we often take for granted, like taking out trash, changing a tire and even bringing me my morning coffee but he is also always there to cheer me up and make me smile with his endured good sense of humor. He has encouraged me in some of my darkest moments. His attitude and example of never giving up has encouraged me in ways that he will never know. He's always there to lend a hand in any way possible for him. Who would have ever thought that this young man whom at eighteen looked like someone that would have to be cared for for the rest of his life would turn into one of the most helpful and caring people I've ever known. Pretty awesome, huh? You might be asking who this person is. It's my son, Kevin. And I am proud to say so.
